SURGERY: VEIN OPERATION

  • classical operations
  • radiofrequency surgery
  • Original minimally invasive CLARIVAIN surgery without the need for anesthesia with discharge home after the procedure
  • laser surgery

Lower limb varicose vein operation

We currently offer a full range of varicose vein surgeries.

The different types are suitable for the specific type of venous disease. In particular, mini-invasive treatment methods are not applicable to all patients and their use in poorly indicated cases leads to incomplete treatment or early recurrence of varicose veins.

Therefore, the basic prerequisite is a good preoperative examination and responsible indication by the surgeon with regard to the specific type of venous disease.

Preoperative consultation

Our surgeons will recommend the most appropriate surgical procedure in order to ensure the maximum safety of the procedure and the lowest risk of recurrence (varicose vein recurrence).

Anatomy

The venous system consists of a superficial and a deep system. The superficial veins include vena saphena magna (VSM), vena saphena parva (VSP) + perforates. Procedures performed at the surgical department of Dr. Feather Clinic concern only the superficial venous system - varices.

The removal of varicose veins of the lower limbs will reduce the accompanying difficulties such as pain and swelling of the lower limbs and improve the cosmetic effect.

Length of hospital stay

Laser, radiofrequency and mechano-chemical ablation are usually performed in a one-day regimen.  The patient is hospitalized for only a few hours. He is discharged home on the same day.

Classical surgical method - we continue to refine our surgical procedures to ensure the most gentle procedure possible. Depending on the nature of the procedure, the patient may be discharged home on the same day, but more often the hospitalization is by the next day.

Classical method of varicose vein operation

Preoperative preparation

Before the surgery, an ultrasound examination of the veins is necessary, according to which the doctor determines the scope and type of surgery most suitable for the client.

The procedure is performed under either general anaesthesia or local spinal anaesthesia. Patients who will be operated on under general anaesthesia must not eat or drink from midnight before the operation. Adequate fluid intake (at least 2.5-3 litres per day) is required until then to avoid possible post-operative complications.

Women should not menstruate at the time of surgery - to be adjusted beforehand if necessary in consultation with a gynaecologist. According to the latest recommendations of professional societies, hormonal contraceptives are not recommended before varicose vein surgery.

A week before the operation, the patient must correct the blood clotting reducer in consultation with the doctor.

Classical operation (Stripping VSM, VSP)

An incision is made in the groin (below the knee in the case of VSP) to ligate the individual branches in the area of the VSM bulb, ligate the VSM, insert a wire (stripper) into the vein and remove the damaged vein. Other varices are removed from small punctures.

Postoperative recovery

After the proposed medical procedure, a restriction in the usual way of life of 4-8 weeks and a restriction in the ability to work can be expected. Heavy physical work is not suitable. Compression stockings are recommended to be worn for approximately 6 weeks. Limb positioning, massage, compresses and regular check-ups in the outpatient clinic will be recommended.

Radiofrequency induced thermotherapy - a gentle method with rapid mobilisation

Preoperative preparation

Before the surgery, an ultrasound examination of the veins is necessary, according to which the doctor determines the scope and type of procedure best suited to the client.

A week before the operation, the patient must correct the blood-clotting medication in consultation with the doctor.

Operation

The procedure is possible under local anaesthesia or combined with analgosedation, spinal anaesthesia or general anaesthesia.

It is a minimally invasive procedure for the intravenous treatment of insufficiency of the saphenous basin, primarily the greater saphena (vena saphena magna).

In this procedure, the veins are heated to a temperature of 60° to 100°C using an ultra-thin applicator inserted into the vein. This local and precisely targeted application of radiofrequency energy causes the vein to contract and close (by thermal effect).

During the subsequent recovery, the vein remains in the patient's body (it is not torn out) but gradually becomes partially absorbed - it is no longer visible.

Postoperative recovery

Patients can start walking again on the same day as the procedure. They return to their normal activities within a few days.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, we recommend wearing compression stockings for only about 2-3 weeks, compared to 6 weeks for conventional varicose vein operation.

Laser Operation

A gentle procedure without the need for general anaesthesia. Overnight care in bed or outpatient treatment.

Material (laser fiber) - equipment from the renowned manufacturer NEOLASER - Israel.

ClariVein method - mechanical - chemical ablation method

  • gentle operation without the need for general anaesthesia
  • without the need for hospitalization
